Kylo Ren Is Coming To Disney Parks

The new evil villain of the Star Wars Saga will be making his way to Disney Parks next month! Meeting with Guests on the bridge of his First Order Star Destroyer, Kylo Ren will take the place of Darth Vader at the Star Wars Launch Bay in both Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. Chewbacca, who currently meets with Guests in a secret resistance base, will continue to do so.

From personal experience, I can also tell you that there is definitely the likelihood that you'll run into some First Order Stormtroopers outside of the Launch Bay and maybe even some Jaws inside, if you hang out long enough...

Spider-Man Is Coming To Disneyland!

When the reimagined Super Hero HQ opens this fall at Disneyland Park, everyone’s favorite web slinger is swinging in for the occasion. That’s right! Spider-Man will be making his Disneyland Resort debut in a heroic new character greeting location, where you can snap a photo, grab an autograph or just thank him for keeping everyone safe from the likes of Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin!

Super Hero HQ is the West Coast home base of some of the greatest heroes in the universe. It’s the place to go, not only to meet some of those heroes, but to discover the super hero within. You can tour Treasures of Asgard and cross the Bifrost to come face-to-face with the mighty Avenger, Thor. You can also virtually suit up as Iron Man and check out the Hall of Armor at Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries, play some of the latest games in the Game Center and pick up some Super Hero gear to take with them on their journey home.

Super Hero HQ opens Nov.16, 2015 in the Tomorrowland Expo Center at Disneyland Park.

Chef Mickey's Opening For Brunch

One of the most popular (and most fun, in my opinion) character dining experiences is about to open up for mid-day meals! Chef Mickey's at Disney's Contemporary Resort currently serves breakfast from 7-11:30am and dinner from 5-9:30pm. Beginning on May 31, 2015, they will begin offering brunch to guests, from 11:30am-2:30pm.

While characters are always subject to change, Chef Mickey's most often features Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto, and Goofy. Like I mentioned, it's super conveniently located at the Contemporary Resort, which is down a 5/10 minute walking path from the Magic Kingdom. It is also on the monorail line. Not just "on the line," actually; the monorail runs right through the middle of the Contemporary Resort! If you're using the Disney Dining Plan to cover you meal costs, the brunch buffet, like breakfast and dinner, will use 1 Table Service entitlement.

Major "Frozen" Announcements For Walt Disney World

Disney's Frozen has been a sensation since coming to theaters in November 2013. At Walt Disney World, Anna & Elsa have been one of the most popular meet and greets since... well, forever! This past summer, Frozen came to Hollywood Studios in a big way with the Frozen Summer Fun LIVE! experiences. Now, Disney will be adding even more Frozen Fun to its parks! From Disney:
We're starting construction on a brand new "Frozen" attraction at the Norway Pavilion at Epcot. The new attraction, which replaces Maelstrom, will take [guests] to Arendelle and immerse them in many of their favorite moments and music from the film. The pavilion will also include a royal greeting location with Anna and Elsa. These "Frozen" elements are great additions to the Norway Pavilion, which showcases the country and region that inspired the film.
In order for work to begin on the attraction and character greeting area, the last day Guests can enjoy the Maelstrom attraction is Oct. 5, 2014. The project is anticipated to be complete by early 2016, and the Norway pavilion will remain open through construction.
The wintry wonder and magic of "Frozen" will also enchant Magic Kingdom Park this holiday season. Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf join the festive holiday procession, "Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade," along with a flurry of skaters, skiiers, and ice cutters from the Kingdom of Arendelle. This parade is offered during Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, select nights Nov. 7-Dec. 19, 2014. The parade will also be presented daily Dec. 20-31, 2014.
Each evening beginning Nov. 5, 2014, Anna and Elsa will appear in a new show on the Castle Forecourt Stage at the heart of Magic Kingdom Park, as Queen Elsa uses her incredible powers to transform Cinderella Castle into a glimmering ice palace for the holidays.
And, if [guests] haven't experienced "Frozen Summer Fun LIVE!" at Disney's Hollywood Studios® yet, they are in for a special treat. Due to its popularity, two elements of this special event are now set to continue.
[Guests] can enjoy "For the First Time in Forever: A 'Frozen' Sing-Along Celebration," a hilarious and interactive presentation of the "Frozen" story - extended indefinitely! The show is presented up to 10 times per day in the park's Premiere Theater on Streets of America, and Disney Fastpass+ service is now available.
Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Frozen Funland will be moving on Sept. 28, 2014 from Soundstage One to a new space, in Streets of America near the exit of the Studio Backlot Tour. The new Wandering Oaken's, expected to operate through the holiday season, will feature a larger-than-ever play area with real snow, plenty of "Frozen" merchandise, character cupcakes, and other treats.

An Easy Way To Get Autographs On A Disney Cruise

I love meeting Disney Characters. It's one of my kids' favorite things to do and, consequently, one of mine. There are lots of great characters to meet on a Disney Cruise. What to do if you spend so much time having other types of fun, that you forget to meet some of them? Or, what if you are just coming from the pool and don't have your autograph book or what-have-you with you? There's a great solution! Bring whatever you'd like autographs, be it a book, pillowcase, shirt, photo matte, etc. to Guest Services, aboard the ship. If you can, go ahead and pack it in a Zip-Loc bag with your name and stateroom number on it. You can even include special pens, colorful markers, and so on with it. The Disney Characters will go ahead and autograph your items (up to 2 items per stateroom) for you, and they will be delivered right back to your stateroom, on the last night of your voyage!

Oswald The Lucky Rabbit Is Coming To The Disneyland Resort!

Have you heard of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit? Oswald hit the animation scene back in 1927, predating even Mickey Mouse. From the time of his inception until 1928, Walt Disney actually produced 26 individual Oswald the Lucky Rabbit animated shorts, before he left the studio that he worked for and the rights to Oswald, behind. It was then that Walt took a look at Oswald, rounded his ears, and gave him a more... mouse-like appearance, thus creating Mickey Mouse.

The Walt Disney Company got the rights to Oswald back in 2006, in exchange for allowing sports broadcaster, Al Michaels, who was under contract with Disney at the time, to leave the company and go work for NBC Universal. Then, earlier this year, Oswald made his first Disney Parks appearance, at Tokyo DisneySea.

So, the point of my story is that Oswald is now coming to Disney California Adventure Park at the Disneyland Resort! Beginning September 14, 2014, you'll be able to find him to meet, chat with, and take pictures, on Buena Vista Street.

Hope you enjoyed the short history lesson and have a great time meeting Walt's "first" Mickey Mouse!

Fun Things To Do While Waiting To Meet Merida

One of my favorite places to visit at the Magic Kingdom is Fairytale Garden. It's just to the right of Cinderella Castle, where you can meet Merida from Disney•Pixar's Brave. But, while I love Merida, there is actually something else that makes this little area super fun for my family. While you are waiting to meet the Princess, kids are actually encouraged to hop off line to color some Brave-themed pictures as well as to take a turn at practicing their archery skills with a family-friendly bow and arrows! Plus, Merida is just a great, down-to-earth kind of Princess, who has lots of fun stories to tell (Ask her about what happened when she tried to teach Abu - Aladdin's monkey friend - how to use a bow and arrow). If you go to meet Merida early enough in the morning, you may even catch her "crowing." Peter Pan tends to shout out his loud, cock-a-doodle-doo sound, as he passes both Fairytale Garden and the Mad Tea Party ride, where Alice in Wonderland has her Meet & Greet. Both Merida and Alice are fun-loving types, who enjoy crowing right back at Peter!

Frozen Returning To Epcot's World Showcase!

I'm not one to go posting lots of rumors before I hear the details from the mouse's mouth itself, but this news does come a source that has had a pretty good track record of getting the info. correct. Temporary Tourist is reporting that the Norway Pavilion at Epcot's World Showcase will be going Frozen.  The specifics are not available just yet, but the word is that Anna and Elsa will be returning to Norway for a meet and greet experience. This is where they first began meeting with guests in the late fall of 2013. Presumably, they will continue to meet at Princess Fairytale Hall at Magic Kingdom, as well, thus decreasing the dramatically long lines that tend to form to meet the royal sisters. Apparently, they will not simply be moving back to their old location but, rather, Disney will be building them a new spot, within the Pavilion, that will be able to accommodate larger lines as well as FastPass+ reservations.

At the same time, it looks like the Maelstrom ride in Norway will also be getting a Frozen-themed facelift. It is unclear how much of the attraction itself will be changing and how much the Frozen characters will be simply be overlaid onto the existing attraction, similarly to Donald Duck and The Three Caballeros were added into the Mexico Pavilion's, El Rio Del Tiempo.

The timeline being reported for all of these changes to be completed is sometime between Fall 2014 and the end of the year.  I'll definitely keep you posted as additional, official announcements are made!

5 Things To Keep Your Kids Entertained At Epcot's World Showcase

One of the concerns that I hear from my Disney Families is, "I would love to check out the World Showcase at Epcot, but I'm worried that my kids will be bored." Fortunately, one of the things that Disney does best is tailor experiences to the whole family, so you can be sure that there is plenty to keep kiddos interested in while traveling around the 11 countries that make up Epcot's World Showcase, giving us grown-up types the chance to enjoy sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and then some from countries like Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy the United States, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom, and Canada.

5. Attractions
Did you know that there are actually 2 very popular rides at the World Showcase in Epcot? You can find the Gran Fiesta Tour starring The Three Amigos in the Mexico Pavilion. This boat ride gives you a glimpse of some of the architecture, music, and culture of Mexico, while also following the story of Donald Duck. Donald is eluding his friends, José Carioca, and Panchito, who are searching for him so that they can perform in a scheduled concert.

Another World Showcase ride in the Maelstrom, in the Norway Pavilion. Maelstrom is another boat ride, but this one will send you along a river, teaching you all sort of interesting info. about Norwegian culture... until you meet up with the trolls of Norway legend, who perform a magical curse, sending you and your boat backwards, and eventually forward again, down a mini-drop waterfall!

UPDATE: As of October 2014, the Maelstrom is no longer in operation. In it's place, Disney is working on a Frozen-themed attraction.

4. Characters
Disney Friends abound at Epcot's World Showcase. Seriously, they are all over the place:

  • Mexico: Donald, wearing his Mexican clothing.
  • China: Mulan
  • Germany: Snow White
  • Morocco: Aladdin & Jasmine
  • France: Aurora, Belle
  • United Kingdom: Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh & Tigger
The Times Guide is super helpful here, as the characters are not out continuously but, rather, each on their own set schedule.

3. Kidcot Fun Stops
Each of the countries in the World Showcase has a Kidcot Fun Stop station, where children can color a cardboard cutout of Duffy the Disney Bear or Agent P that they receive from a Cast Member who is actually from the country that you are in. The Cast Members at those Kidcot Stations love answering questions and chatting about their native lands. Plus, they'll even draw their country's flag for your kiddo to keep, as well as provide a country-specific stamp.

2. Passports
There is even more fun to be had by purchasing a World Showcase Passport while you're at Epcot. The Passports comes with stickers representing each country. So, go ahead and hang onto those stickers, handing them out to your kiddos when they have met certain criteria that you set forth - simply reaching the country, exploring a particular aspect of the pavilion, learning how to say, "Hello," in the country's language from the Cast Member at the Kidcot Stop, etc. And, speaking of the Kidcot Stations, feel free to ask the Cast Members to stamp the passports instead of the cardboard cutouts, if you choose. Plus, there is plenty of room in the booklet for them to even write a little note in their language, or for you own children to document a little of what they find by checking out different aspects of each country themselves.

1. Agent P's World Showcase Adventure
This interactive adventure stars the lovable Perry the Platapus, from Disney's Phineas & Ferb, as Agent P, trying to stop the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz' latest schemes. When your kids sign up for this adventure, they'll be handed a cell-phone type device, on which the Good Guys will keep in touch with them, giving them clues and riddles that your children will have to solve before moving on. Each Adventure takes place in one of the World Showcase countries, and you can definitely ask the Cast Member that you sign up with to set you guys off on a mission in a country of your choosing, if you have somewhere specific that you'd like to be in mind. The adventures last for about 30 minutes each.

Snow White's Magic Kingdom Meet & Greet Moving... Again

The search for a good home for Snow White at the Magic Kingdom continues. As of right now, if you're looking for her Meet & Greet, you can find her on the Front Porch of the Town Square Theater, just past the Walt Disney World Railroad overpass on Main Street USA. I'm not at Disney World right now so, by all rights, I shouldn't yet have a picture of Snow White in this location... but I do! We met her here, way back in the summer of 2012:

There are now lots of great characters regularly available to meet in that approximate location:

  • Mickey Mouse - inside Town Square Theater (he will often, though not always, speak to guests at this location)
  • Tinkerbell - inside Town Square Theater
  • Snow White - on the front porch of Town Square Theater
  • Mary Poppins - just past Town Square Theater, between Tony's Town Square Restaurant and The Chapeau hat shop
  • Pluto: Town Square Flag Pole
  • Marie: Town Square Flag Pole
  • Aurora: directly opposite from Town Square Theater, at the Town Square Courtyard, next to City Hall
Snow White has seen her fair share of location changes, recently. She moved into Princess Fairytale Hall upon its 2013 completion. She was recently moved out of there to make room for rookie Disney Princesses Anna & Elsa and found a short-lived home at the Town Square Courtyard, next to City Hall. However, when Aurora left Fairytale Hall, she moved back to her old location - the Town Square Courtyard, next to City Hall. So, Snow moved just a little ways down Main Street USA, to Center Street. And now, just a week or two later, here she is, back where she started before Princess Fairytale Hall in the first place.

For whatever it's worth, if you're in Epcot, you can find Snow White in the location where she has been for as long as I can remember: the Germany Pavilion in the World Showcase.

Aurora And Snow White Leaving Princess Fairytale Hall - Anna And Elsa, Rapunzel, And Cinderella Remain

Princess Fairytale Hall is about to become one more princess lighter. Once the home to Meet and Greet experiences with Rapunzel and Cinderella on one side of the Hall and Snow White, Aurora, Anna, and Elsa on the other, a change to Anna and Elsa's schedule, allowing them to meet with guests from park open until 30 minutes prior to park close, saw Snow White move out of the newly completed Fantasyland location back out to her old stomping grounds, on Main Street, USA. Beginning Sunday, June 15, 2014, Aurora will be leaving Fairytale Hall hall, as well, leaving Anna and Elsa to meet by themselves.

Where will you be able to find Aurora once this move has taken place? The Sleeping Beauty star will be moving to Town Square Courtyard, displacing poor Snow White from her latest home. She will be available to meet with guests in the late afternoon/early evening.  Snow White will then be moving to Center Street, meeting guests on the small, "road to nowhere," located about halfway down Main Street, USA, from the morning until early afternoon.

Tinker Bell Moving To Town Square Theater

Beginning May 20, 2014, Tinker Bell will no longer be meeting with guests at her Magical Nook in Adventureland location but, rather, at Town Square Theater on Main Street USA, still in the Magic Kingdom. This spot will be located right next door from the spot where Mickey meets with (and talks to) guests. However, it will be quite a different experience. In fact, to meet with Tinker Bell, guests will enter the new, "Garden Theater," where they will be shrunk down to pixie size. At that point, they will be invited to journey through a magical portal that will transport them right back to Tinker Bell's same old Magical Nook.

The cool thing is that this location will be FastPass+ accessible, allowing for guests to lock in their Tinker Bell meeting time in advance. Unfortunately, however, whereas Miss Bell used to meet alongside one of her fairy friends, it will be just her at this new location.

There is no official word, as of yet, as to what is going to be done with the old Magical Nook location in Adventureland, or what prompted this change. I'll be sure to keep you posted!

From April 12 - April 20, 2014, the duo will be meeting guests on the bridge at the entrance to Adventureland. Their typical location is next to the queue area for Peter Pan's Flight in Fantasyland. The move is being made to reduce some of the potential congestion during the busy Easter Season.

How To Have Even More Fun With Characters!

One of the most enjoyed aspects (for both children and grown-ups) at Disney is often the character Meet & Greets - those times that you have an opportunity to walk up to a favorite Disney character, take pictures with them, ask them to sign your autograph book, and get some good furry or royal hugs. But one thing that guests often forget is that you can actually chat it up a little bit with these characters. After all, you've waited patiently in line for your turn - take advantage of the moment! Imagine this were a "real life" situation. Would you simply walk up any other celebrity that you might have waited to see, give them a hug or a handshake, take a picture, and walk away, or would you take the opportunity to say, "Hello," ask how their day is going, and gush, just a little bit, about some reasons why you love them so much? The Disney characters are no different and it will often provoke way more fun and enjoyment out of the characters right back at you!

When my family was chatting with Aladdin and Jasmine in Moroco in Epcot's World Showcase, Aladdin, flipping through our autograph book to find a spot to sign, noticed that Merida had previously signed the book. He launched into this whole little story about how Merida had tried to teach Abu (Aladdin's monkey) how to use a bow and arrow. He pointed out an empty spot, that was clearly missing some sort of decoration, on the storefront behind him - what was once there having fallen victim to a monkey shooting an arrow! The next time we saw Merida at the Magic Kingdom, we mentioned that Aladdin had told us all about Abu and the arrow, and she was quick to point out an arrow that had gone astray and was stuck into the scenery of her own Meet & Greet location - another product of Abu's archery training! The story was hilarious, and the way that the two characters, in different parks, had this joint story about Abu was just incredible and added so much fun to our day - enough that I'm still talking about it now! And we would never have known, if we were just interested in grabbing a quick picture and moving on.

The furry characters know when they are meeting with a family who is open to a little fun, too. The
last time that we met with Chip & Dale over and Camp Minnie-Mickey at Disney's Animal Kingdom (the two chimpunks now meet outside of Rafiki's Planet Watch at that park), Chip began dancing with my daughter, when her hair tie suddenly popped off of one of her pig tails! Chip went ahead and picked up the hair tie (way more dexterity than I would have believed him to have, in the fist place) and then began to put it back in her hair. He worked really hard at doing her hair properly, too! Unfortunately, hair ties were not his strong suit, due to his oversized chipmunk hands. Again, that interaction, which lasted quite some time, was a highlight of our trip, and wouldn't have happened if we were just looking for an autograph and a picture and, then, to move right along.

And this is all true whether you're meeting characters at Disney World, like in my examples, or at Disneyland, on a Disney Cruise, or even at Aulani! Just some things to think about when you're about to meet with a Disney friend. Be open to a little bit of extra fun, and they will do their best to throw some your way!

Anna & Elsa Moving And Available For FastPass+

Since they first began meeting with guests back in November 2013, Anna & Elsa from Disney's Frozen have been one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World. Because of the sheer number of people who have been tremendously excited to chat with and take pictures with the Royalty of Arendelle, Disney has been making slight changes and tweaks to their hours, almost since they first arrived, trying to keep the lines (which have gotten as long as 5 hours or more, at times) as reasonable as possible. The biggest change yet, however, will be coming on April 20, 2014. Anna & Elsa will be moving from their current location, at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot, to Princess Storybook Hall at the Magic Kingdom. They will appear together, each day, until the early evening. At that point, other visiting Disney Princesses will be available to meet guests. Cinderella and Rapunzel will also continue to meet with guests at Princess Fairytale Hall.

With the move to the Magic Kingdom, the line to meet Anna & Elsa is expected to move faster and, therefore, be that much shorter - not short, mind you, just shorter. And that is why, along with this switch in venue, guests will also be able to lock in FastPass+ reservations to meet the sisters. And, remember, guests who will be staying at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel can make those reservations up to 60 days in advance of their trip. So, for the time being, I highly recommend taking advantage of that advance window - those reservations are going to go faster than Kristoff's sled down a hill!

Want to know more about the new FastPass system? Check out this Beginner's Guide to FastPass+!

Magical Cast Members: Finding Belle

Dear Cast Member from Magic Kingdom's Toon Town Fair,

It has been a long time since you made our little girl's day and, possibly, our entire vacation - we're talking all the way back to September 2010. You were working with Belle at her Meet & Greet location right there in Toon Town Fair but, as we discovered when we entered the room to meet her, Cinderella, and Aurora, we learned that, for whatever reason, she was not available to meet at that particular time. Cinderella was there. Aurora was there. There was a big empty spot where Belle was supposed to be! Her favorite princess being Belle, all my daughter had wanted to do for that last activity before we left the park to head back to the airport and home, was to give Belle and hug and say, "goodbye." So, after happily hugging the other two princesses, when my little girl got to that last, empty spot, her heart sank. "Where's Belle?" she asked us. We honestly didn't know where Belle was. There was no time to wait and find out, though - we had a plane to catch.

We made our way out of the Meet & Greet, through the shop at the exit, down the path leading back to the main road, and then began to head out of Toontown Fair. All the while, my daughter, broken hearted, tears streaming down her face, just kept saying, "I want to say, 'goodbye,' to Belle." And that's when I first noticed you. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw you running out of the shop at the exit of the Meet & Greet, though I didn't think much of what you were doing at the time. Sure enough, though, you came running down the path, turned the corner, and headed straight for us. "Come with me," you said. So we went. You ushered us into a hallway, not intended for guest use, and began pulling curtains closed. "Wait right here." And then, out stepped Belle, in her big yellow ball gown with a big ol' smile on her face. "I heard my little friend calling my name!" she said. My daughter's face lit up! Ah, who am I kidding - All of faces lit up and, now, it was my wife and I who were crying. We were so touched at the effort made by both Belle and of course, YOU, the Cast Member who chased us down, and it is a memory that we will keep with us forever.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!
