New Allergy Friendly Menus Ready To Debut At Disney Parks

If you or a member of your family has a food allergy, you probably already know how amazingly accommodating both Walt Disney World and Disneyland already are in terms of making sure you are safe, happy, and healthy when it comes to your food choices.  But beginning April 14, 2015, eating at the Disney Parks is about to get even more convenient! That's because Disney will be introducing new allergy-friendly menus across their parks, at about 120 quick-service and table-service locations! This concept was initially tested last fall, and is now ready to go full scale! Here's what Disney Parks and Resorts chef and culinary dietary specialist has to say about it:

"Over the years, the number of guests with food allergies and intolerances has continued to grow. In 2013 alone, our cast members assisted with more than 650,000 special dietary requests. These new allergy menus are another way in which we can provide high-quality, safe and more accessible alternatives, and the best possible dining experience for guests with specific dietary needs."

"The new allergy-friendly menus provide allergen content for each menu item, making informed choices easier. Menu selection includes appetizers (where applicable), entrées, side items, desserts and kids'  meals  and focuses on the most common allergens: gluten/wheat, milk, peanut, tree nut and fish.

"Guests are still able to consult directly with a restaurant chef or special diets trained cast member. We also encourage guests to continue to communicate special dietary needs to our restaurant cast members, as this allows our culinary team to take extra measures during preparation to prevent the introduction of the allergen.

"Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is the recipient of a FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) Award for dedication to providing a safe and enjoyable dining experience for vacationing families and our chefs have been recognized for their commitment to food allergy awareness, education and management."

Disney's Christmas Day Parade TV Special Gets Frozen (Plus Show Taping Dates!)

Disney's Christmas Day Parade
is an annual tradition
that dates back 31 years!

Princess Anna, Queen Elsa and Gang are continuing to leave their mark at the Disney Parks, as this year's Christmas Day Parade gets Frozen. Aptly titled Disney Parks Frozen Christmas Celebration, here's what the ABC Television Network (owned by the Walt Disney Company) has to say about it's upcoming special:

"Music, magic and merriment come together when Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida present the 31st annual Christmas Day parade and TV special. The star-studded sounds of the season include some of today's top musical talents lending their voices to celebrate the holidays. And, from fairy tales to classic Christmas carols, Disney friends and holiday characters spread joy and good tidings through Disneyland Park in California and the Magic Kingdom Park in Florida. This year promises some extra Frozen fun with fanciful floats and colorful cavalcades as Santa Claus himself along with his reindeer, wind their holly jolly way down Main Street, USA."

The special is scheduled to air at 10:00am-12:00pm EST. However, the event is not live. It is currently scheduled to be taped from December 6-9, 2014. All guests are invited to attend the taping along with their park admission for the day. Keep in mind, however, the parade does not run straight through, from start to finish. Floats may stop and be restarted, performers may repeat their routines a number of times... Though it is a fabulous opportunity to check out, first hand, all of the work and time that goes into shooting a television special! It may also prove to be a fantastic day to visit other Magic Kingdom attractions, since so many other guest will be watching the parade taping.

Safety First... Even At The Most Magical Place On Earth

Recently, there was an accident at the Magic Kingdom's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. While on the ride, someone got the tips of two of his fingers severed...

I don't know about you but, when I first read that, my mind immediately began assuming that the person was someone just fooling around way too much, doing things that they knew they shouldn't be doing, and something awful happened as a result. But, it turns out that the person injured was a middle-aged guy who, from what I can tell from the reports, was simply sitting in the Pirates boat, relaxing, and enjoying himself. However, and here's the thing, it turns out that he had his elbow resting up on the side of the boat, with his hand dangling down on the outside. You know the way. Some of us drive in our cars like that, when we've got the windows rolled all the way down. There is a reason why Disney asks guests to keep their arms inside the boat at all times, though. And, in this case, the ride vehicle bumped against a wall, and two of the gentleman's fingertips were cut off. And those aren't something that he will ever get back. The man was taken to the hospital and he is doing fine, but his fingers were lost and gone.

So, my whole point here is to just be careful and follow the instructions of the Cast Members as well as the announcements made before and during the rides. And that goes goes for the Disney Parks as well as any other theme park out there. I know that the rules are cliché and we've all heard them a million times, but they really are serious. This was a grownup, not trying to act silly or cause any trouble... but he wasn't heeding the warnings, and the rest is history.

Warm Pastries And Baked Goods Coming To Main Street Bakery And More

Many Disney Parks fans were quite skeptical when they first heard that Starbucks would be coming to Disney World... and replacing the Main Street Bakery, at that. However, once the coffee shop was in place, it became clear that Disney had no intention of changing the theming or the "feel" of the location. Still called the Main Street Bakery, guests can now enjoy Starbucks quality coffee while at the Magic Kingdom (and in its Epcot location, a soon-to-come Downtown Disney location, and its Downtown Disney Anaheim store). One of the things that I did hear that guests were dissapointed about was the lack of baked goods available. Well, all that is about to change!

La Boulange, a San Francisco bakery and café, has partnered with Starbucks to bring their artisanal pastries to Starbucks locations across the country - Disney Parks included. Guests can soon expect to find delicious, warm items like Croissants, Sticky Buns, Brownies, and Cookies at the Disney Starbucks locations.

Once again, it is apparant just how much Disney listens to the thoughts, comments, and ideas of its guests. If there is ever anything that you really love or would like to see more of, make sure to let the great folks at Disney know. Thanks to the guests who made their wonderful thoughts known in this case, we will all be able to enjoy delicious pastries with our morning coffee!

Oh No! Our Favorite Character Skipped Our Table!

There may be times when you'll find yourself at a Disney Character Dining experience and one of the characters will skip your table. Maybe a different character was already there, maybe your server was taking your order, or any number of other reasons. Typically, if this type of thing happens, the character will simply come right back to you as soon as you're available. Sometimes, however, things go amiss and the character, for one reason or another, doesn't return. Maybe you can't even figure out why a particular character hasn't shown up for hugs and autographs. Or maybe it's totally something on your end - there have been times when one of my kiddos has been in the bathroom or has even been asleep when a character has come by. Ultimately, what you need to know is that it typically takes about 45 minutes - 1 hour for all of the characters at a Character Dining to make their way around to your table. If that 45 minutes has passed, and you haven't had a chance to see someone, (or if your little one was asleep, for instance, and they have since woken up) just go ahead and let your server know. He or she will will then make a point of letter the characters' handler know and, together, they will help to get that character back your way ASAP!

Balancing Kids Of Multiple Ages At Disney

I don't know about you, but when my family goes to Disney World, my 9-yr-old son wants to experience thrills, like Expedition Everest and Space Mountain, while my 5 and 2-yr-olds are happy with Dumbo the Flying Elephant and "its a small world." We've tried doing the thing where we split up a few times during the day, hitting one thrill ride at a time, but it always seemed to make the vacation feel more hectic than we would have liked. At the same time, my younger two could really use more sleep than my oldest. Put 2 and 2 together...

We finally found what works for us on our most recent trip. My son and I woke up early, took the stroller and the backpack with us, and headed off to the parks, while my wife and little ones slept in. Since park opening is such a great time of day as far as getting on the most popular attractions goes, my son and I were able to hit each of his favorites right then, in the morning. My wife is not one to sleep late at Disney, so she had gotten the girls up and out and met us at the park about an hour or so after opening. My taking the stroller really helped her here, as she had nothing to push around, fold up, or shimmy through doorways. And that extra little bit of time in the morning gave us more family-time during the day, relieved my son of the worry that we wouldn't have a chance to ride the big rides, and gave him and me the chance to spend some one-on-one time together - something that does not come by easily.

An Amazing (and Free) Way To Celebrate!

There are so many things to celebrate on a Disney Vacation, from birthdays to anniversaries, family reunions to engagements, and then some. And what better way to commemorate these special occasions than to invite all of the Disney Cast Members and other Guests in on the celebration with you. When you arrive at your Resort Hotel, or at any Guest Services location or shop, let them know what you are celebrating and ask if you can have a Celebration Button. Then, proudly wear it throughout your Disney days. There is no better feeling than having people who you are passing by wish you a Happy Birthday by name. You might find yourself in an extra special conversation with a Disney Princess who notices your "1st Time" button. And these buttons aren't limited to what Disney has pre-printed. There are generic, "I'm Celebrating" buttons, as well. The Cast Member who gives you the button will be happy to add anything that you'd like on there for you. On my most recent trip to Disney, I caught sight of a family with buttons that read, "My dad just beat cancer; Hubby just beat cancer; I just beat cancer." It was super fun and made both me and the celebrating family so happy when I was able to congratulate them on beating cancer. For that moment, I got to join in their joy and they got to experience that excitement and happiness all over again, right there on the monorail.
